Did you know that in 2015, more than 44 million people were diagnosed with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia worldwide (according to Alzheimer’s Disease International)? Nowadays it can seem as if Alzheimer's is a normal part of the aging process. However, that is not the case. And while there is currently no cure for the disease, there are things we can be aware of in order to help our loved one get treatment as soon as possible.
Recognize the Signs
If you notice any of the following symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, make an appointment with a physician in order to obtain a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Memory loss is probably one of the main signs of Alzheimer's disease but also the most difficult to discover because—let's face it—we forget things as we get older. So, how do you know the difference between common forgetfulness and Alzheimer's disease? For starters, forgetting things, such as an appointment or to pick something up from the store, is a common occurrence. But, with this, it is usually remembered at some point later on down the line—possibly later that day or the next. With Alzheimer's, forgetting recently learned information or asking the same questions over and over is a common symptom.
Confusion is also a sign of Alzheimer's disease. If your loved one is having difficulty keeping track of important dates, different seasons, or having trouble understanding how they got somewhere, it may be important to make an appointment with a physician for further evaluation.
It is also important to notice any changes in mood or personality of your loved one. We are all going to have bad days and moments. However, if they suddenly become withdrawn from hobbies and pastimes they used to love and enjoy or become easily upset when they are out of their comfort zone, these could all be signs of dementia.
